It was an ambitious first project for Ritchson to take on behind the camera. Not only did he direct the film, but he also co-wrote the script with Joshua Montcalm and had a supporting role in the movie as an NSA agent. 

He came up with the original story himself, inspired by the real-life Cicada 3301 organization, which posted cryptic online puzzles to recruit codebreakers.

Though he initially wrote the script alone, he brought in Montcalm for rewrites when he became dissatisfied with the first draft. 

Ritchson had originally intended to play the hacker lead role as well until deciding to tackle directing duties instead. Filming took place in Toronto in mid-2018. 

In addition to co-writing and directing, Ritchson used his clout from his acting career to help assemble the cast, which includes Jack Kesy, Conor Leslie, Ron Funches, and Andreas Apergis.

The movie follows hacker Leslie (Kesy) as he gets caught up in Cicada’s dangerous recruitment game while evading government agents.
