Shruti’s story arc is a heartbreaking one as she grapples with burnout and mental health issues, ultimately leading to a tragic conclusion in the show’s sixth episode.

While Shruti is a fictional character created for the TV series, her story resonates with real-life cases of NHS staff who have struggled with mental health challenges due to the demanding nature of their work.

Her performance has been widely praised by critics and audiences alike. Her ability to convey the depth of Shruti’s emotions, from her dedication to her patients to her inner turmoil, is a testament to her talent as an actress.

Ambika Mod’s highly anticipated project ‘One Day’

Mod’s highly anticipated project, One Day, is a British television series adaptation of David Nicholls’ bestselling novel of the same name. The series, set to premiere on Netflix on February 8, 2024, promises to be a captivating love story spanning two decades.

Mod takes on the lead role of Emma Morley, opposite Leo Woodall as Dexter Mayhew. The story follows Emma and Dexter’s lives on the same day, July 15, every year, from their graduation from Edinburgh University in 1988 to the present day.

One Day explores the complexities of love, friendship, and the passage of time as Emma and Dexter navigate their often tumultuous and deeply connected relationship.

The series is expected to cover more of the novel’s storylines than the 2011 film adaptation, providing a richer and more comprehensive exploration of the characters’ lives.

Mod’s portrayal of Emma has already been widely praised, with critics hailing her as a revelation in this, her first lead role. Her nuanced performance captures the essence of Emma’s character, bringing depth and authenticity to the role.

The series is helmed by a talented team, including writer Nicole Taylor, who won a BAFTA for her work on Three Girls, and executive producer David Nicholls, who wrote the original novel.

One Day promises to be a highly binge-able and emotionally resonant series, appealing to fans of romantic comedies and anyone drawn to stories of enduring love and connection.

Ambika Mod refused to audition for ‘One Day’ at first

Mod’s journey to landing the lead role of Emma Morley in Netflix’s One Day adaptation was a complex one. Despite being a longtime fan of David Nicholls’ novel, which she first read at age 14, she initially refused to audition for the part.

As she reveals in an interview with Grazia, when the email notification for the self-tape audition for ‘Emma, One Day’ popped up on her phone, her immediate reaction was, “Nah, I’m not doing that.”

She turned down the audition over and over again in the following months. Mod cites her love for the book as the reason for her reluctance, stating, “I love the book so much and I just didn’t see myself playing that part. I thought it was a waste of time.”

“I envisaged the disappointment I would experience if I entertained this idea.” Additionally, she was still coming to terms with the overwhelming attention she received for her acclaimed performance as Shruti in the 2022 drama This Is Going to Hurt

Admitting that she wanted everything to “go away” at the time, Mod was hesitant to take on another high-profile role. However, months after repeatedly turning down the audition, Mod had a change of heart, realizing that she had made a “terrible mistake.”

Fortunately, her impressive talent and newfound determination landed her the coveted role of Emma Morley.
