Arden Cho didn’t reprise her role in ‘Teen Wolf’ because of pay inequity
When the Teen Wolf movie was announced in 2022 that would bring back much of the original cast of the hit MTV show, fans were excited — except for one glaring omission — that of Cho as Kira.
As one of the show’s most popular characters, her absence left many puzzled. Later, Cho revealed that she was offered a return but turned down the role due to pay disparity issues.
Per her quote, she was offered less than half the salary of her white counterparts in the movie. This large gap was unacceptable to her on grounds of equality.
Don’t worry babies, ☺️ thanks for your support. Looking forward to better in 2023! Don’t be scared to walk away or turn down an opportunity if you know it’s not fair and it won’t make you happy! You deserve better ❤️ don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! Love you all, no regrets! https://t.co/hD08Amvhf4

Cho further added that she could easily name over 10 Asian American actors in similar situations of being paid significantly lower wages compared to white actors. She admitted that sometimes actors don’t have the choice to say no due to financial constraints.
However, in her case, she declined not just for herself but to take a stand against the deeper racial pay gap issues within the entertainment industry. Cho hoped her voicing out would drive more conversations around equal actor compensation irrespective of race in the future.
Even though walking away from the sequel of a career-defining show would have been difficult, Cho has no regrets over her decision. She prioritized principles over money or opportunity, paving the path for other Asian artists.
Arden Cho, bounty hunter in ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’
After turning down a return to Teen Wolf over pay disparity issues, Cho has taken on an exciting new role in the highly-anticipated live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix.
She will be playing the character of June, a ruthless and skilled bounty hunter riding a shirshu mount. In the original animated series, June was regarded as the best and most expensive bounty hunter in the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation due to her exceptional tracking abilities.
She worked only for the highest bidders, having no political allegiance except money. Riding her shirt, she could hunt down almost any target once she had their scent.

Cho’s casting is a perfect fit as she has showcased her action skills in past projects like Teen Wolf. Playing this lone-wolf mercenary, June, will also allow her to become a very different character from her past upbeat roles.
June was a small but fan-favorite part of the Avatar universe, so fans are excited to see Cho bring her to life in live-action. This promising new fantasy franchise will reunite Cho with Daniel Dae Kim, her co-star from the past show Hawaii Five-0.
Cho has the acting chops to make June stand out even in a stellar ensemble cast featuring several big names. With its production values and existing fanbase, Avatar could catapult her fame further.
