Suffering from a severe genetic condition called achromatopsia, her vision is highly compromised, leaving her utterly sightless in specific environments. She possesses only minimal, inconsistent residual vision in other settings.

As she explained, she has a rare and severe form of achromatopsia. It is a genetic eye condition. She becomes completely blind in some environments and has residual vision in others.

This real-life impairment mirrors that of her character Marie-Laure, who remarks in the novel, “When I lost my sight, Werner, people said I was brave. When my father left, people said I was brave. But it is not bravery; I have no choice. I wake up and live my life. Don’t you do the same?”  

Loberti credits her guide dog, Ingrid, for encouraging her to audition for the daunting lead role. As she told Vanity Fair, “I probably would’ve never gone on that goddamn audition if not for that dog.” 

The loyal canine remained by her side through production, helping to navigate the set safely. Loberti said, “Ingrid would show me the edge of the carpet so I didn’t trip.”
