However, Chili also struggled with personal issues that impacted her work, like financial troubles and, later, excessive drinking. After witnessing Chili drinking on the job, Chief Boden dismissed her from Firehouse 51 midway through Season 4. 

Showrunner Matt Olmstead confirmed that writing out Chili when they did was intentional to surprise viewers and create dramatic stakes. He also made it clear there were no plans for the character to return later.

By all accounts, producers were happy with Madison’s acting and work on the show. Her character was killed off purely as a creative decision to add drama and complications for the other characters. The showrunners needed to “zhuzh up” the season with an unexpected cast departure.
