Ed Harris, born Edward Allen Harris, is an acclaimed American actor and filmmaker who has starred in numerous popular films over his decades-long career.

He has received critical praise and Academy Award nominations for standout performances in movies like Apollo 13, The Truman Show, Pollock, and The Hours.

With recent roles in projects such as Love Lies Bleeding, Harris continues acting well into his 70s, demonstrating his dedication to the craft.

Harris has amassed an impressive net worth over his 50-year career spanning stage, film, and TV. In this article, we look at his prolific career and analyze the assets and roles that constitute his current multi-million dollar net worth.

Ed Harris’s net worth and early career

Harris has amassed an impressive net worth estimated to be around 25 million dollars over his 50+ year acting career.

He started onstage, performing in plays like Thomas Rickman’s Baalam in 1976 and Tennessee Williams’ Kingdom of Earth in 1976 at the Pasadena Repertory Theatre.

These initial theater roles laid the foundation, though his first major film role came in 1980 alongside Charles Bronson in Borderline.

Just a few years later, in 1983, he achieved more widespread fame for portraying astronaut John Glenn in The Right Stuff, which really boosted his emerging career.

Despite having found some early successes in film and TV in the late 70s and early 80s with roles in shows like Lou Grant and movies like Creepshow, he continued actively working in theater.

His dedicated theatrical performances earned him acclaim, including a 1986 Tony Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in Precious Sons.

While Harris earned respect as a dramatic stage actor, his performances in a string of critically praised films throughout the 90s cemented his reputation and brought financial reward.

Films like Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), Apollo 13 (1995), and The Truman Show (1998) showed his versatility and depth, bringing multiple Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.

Harris also tried his hand at directing, helming the 2000 film Pollock, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of the volatile but brilliant artist Jackson Pollock.

Though his star burned brightly earlier, Harris has remained consistent in TV and film over the decades. Recent roles have added to his wealth from a lifetime of acclaimed performances.

Ed Harris’ career in recent years

In 2008, Harris expanded his skill set by co-writing, directing, and starring alongside Viggo Mortensen in the Western film Appaloosa. He continued taking on a variety of compelling roles in the 2010s in both film and TV.

Highlights include the 2010 survival drama The Way Back, which earned him praise from critics who suggested he could receive his 5th Oscar nomination.

On TV, he won a 2013 Golden Globe and earned an Emmy nomination for portraying Senator John McCain in HBO’s Game Change. He has also lent his trademark gritty voice to big-budget films like 2013’s Gravity, where he voiced Mission Control.

More recently, he took on some especially prominent TV roles, playing the menacing Man in Black villain in HBO’s acclaimed sci-fi series Westworld (2016-present).

Additionally, in 2016, he earned a Lucille Lortel Award nomination for his performance in the Off-Broadway revival of Sam Shepard’s Buried Child.

He has maintained his busy acting schedule into the 2020s. He took over the iconic role of Atticus Finch from Jeff Daniels in Broadway’s To Kill a Mockingbird adaptation in 2019.

Now in his early 70s, Harris continues performing dynamic roles on screens big and small as well as on stage, showing no signs of slowing down.

Ed Harris’ wife is also from the entertainment line

Harris’s wife, Amy Madigan, is also a talented actress and has had a successful career in the entertainment industry herself.

After marrying in 1983 while co-starring in the film Places in the Heart, Harris and Madigan have appeared together in at least nine films over their 40-year marriage.

Madigan once said that being married gives them “the ability and freedom” to film emotionally intimate scenes together. While she frequently collaborates with her husband, Madigan has also built an impressive acting resume in her own right.

Now 73 years old with a net worth estimated at around $6 million, she has over 80 acting credits spanning acclaimed films like Field of Dreams, Gone Baby Gone, and Winter Passing.

On television, she had a starring role as Dr. Katharine Wyatt on Grey’s Anatomy from 2008-2009.

So while Harris’s career and 25 million dollar net worth garners more public attention, his wife Madigan has also woven together decades of prolific acting roles across mediums.

Their shared passion for performance is likely one reason their marriage has thrived for 40+ years in Hollywood. And they continue to create memorable on-screen moments together when the right project comes along.

Ed Harris’ most recent project is ‘Love Lies Bleeding’

Love Lies Bleeding is a romantic thriller directed by Rose Glass and co-written with Weronika Tofilska. It stars Kristen Stewart as a withdrawn gym manager who begins a passionate romance with competitive bodybuilder Katy O’Brian.

However, their relationship gets tangled up with Stewart’s criminal family, which is led by Harris, who portrays a nasty, sleazy crime boss. He took on this dark patriarch role fresh off his turn as the menacing Man in Black on HBO’s Westworld.

Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, and Dave Franco are also starring alongside Stewart and O’Brian in Love Lies Bleeding. Principal photography for the film took place in New Mexico in summer 2022.

After its premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival this January, Love Lies Bleeding will see a wider theatrical release on March 8, 2024, courtesy of distributor A24.

This intense, vengeance-fueled bodybuilding thriller marks Harris’s latest venture onto the big screen, showing that Harris remains as busy as ever, taking on complex, gritty characters that showcase his impressive range.
