Notably, his inaugural YouTube video, released on December 1, 2012, quickly went viral, marking the onset of his journey to stardom. In addition to his online presence, Billy ventured into stand-up comedy in 2020. A manager signed him and landed him a job at a casino.

Since then, he has embarked on a successful tour and captivated audiences with his live performances, including appearances at the renowned Comedy Zone.

His ventures beyond the digital realm have further solidified his reputation as a versatile and beloved comedian. Since then, he has posted many hilarious videos about everyday American life.

Ginger Billy was a respiratory therapist for 12 years

Before embarking on his comedic journey and achieving social media stardom, Billy had a career as a Registered Respiratory Therapist for 12 years. He lived with his wife and family between Union and Lockhart, South Carolina.

For years, Billy worked as a respiratory therapist, a profession he kept as a backup plan in the early stages of his comedy career. He maintained his respiratory therapist job and licensing as a safety net in case his comedy career didn’t take off.

However, it was the retirement of Dale Earnhardt, Jr., that inspired him to create a video specifically for the redneck community.

“Well, when he retired, I thought to myself, ‘man, you know what? This would be something that, uh, all rednecks would love if I talked about,'” he said.

“When I saw how many views it got, I thought to myself, you know what, this might be actually pretty cool. This might be something I want to try again.”

However, when Covid-19 hit, he had to make a choice and focus entirely on comedy. “With the restrictions and all, they said that if I was going to work, I had to shave my beard,” he says. “I make a lot more money with that beard than I do as a respiratory therapist.”

Thus, Billy’s decision to leave his 12-year career as a respiratory therapist and embrace comedy full-time was a turning point, allowing him to fully capitalize on his unique brand of humor and build his impressive net worth.

Ginger Billy’s comedy career

Billy’s comedy career has skyrocketed since he first ventured into online entertainment. His entertaining YouTube videos have garnered a dedicated global following.

After posting his first viral video, Billy continued to nurture his YouTube channel, consistently releasing engaging content. He has uploaded 266 videos, each contributing to his growing fan base.

Among these, the most iconic video, “It’s Actually Food Porn,” uploaded four years ago, has garnered an astonishing 10 million views, attesting to his widespread appeal. One of his earliest viral hits came when he satirized the men’s romper craze.

He went to JC Penney, bought the biggest girls’ romper he could find, and then made a video about it. “I saw them city boys wearing one, and I thought ‘, I’m not going to let them beat me to the fashion punch’, so I got me one,” he says in the video.

“Before you go judging anybody, you go get you one, cause this thing right here? It’s like the Swiss Army knife of clothing. And really, it fits your giblets down there too, if you’re a man. They’re really feeling R-rated right now.”

The video has almost 840,000 views on YouTube alone, and he estimates it got between 40 and 50 million views across all social media channels. From there, his career took off.

A manager signed him, and he started doing stand-up comedy despite gaining experience. “I’d never done stand-up before in my life,” he says.

“So the first time I ever did stand-up, he put me out on the stage and said ‘You’ve got five minutes in front of 4,000 people – have fun.’ It was a real sink or swim situation, you know?”

After that, he started touring with Catfish Cooley and others, entering a new world. “Every day I wake up and I’m just like, this is absolutely amazing. I mean, I’m a dude, you know, I grew up in a little blue-collar town,” he says.

“You’re supposed to grow up. You go to school then you work here. I am making a very good living doing videos and acting the total jackass.”
