In the original animated series, which aired from 2005 to 2008, Sokka was a Water Tribe warrior from the Southern Water Tribe and the son of Chief Hakoda and Kya. 

Following the death of his mother and his father’s departure from war, Sokka was raised by his grandmother, Kanna, alongside his younger sister, Katara. Sokka’s father, Hakoda, had left with all the other men in the tribe to fight the Fire Nation when Sokka was just a young boy.

Despite his desire to join his father, Sokka was not permitted to accompany the men on their mission and was left behind. As no other teenage boys were in the tribe, Sokka became the oldest male and, consequently, the village’s leader.

 He assumed responsibility for the tribe, comically attempting to train children to become future warriors until he and his sister discovered Aang, an Air Nomad, frozen in an iceberg.

When Sokka learned that Aang was the Avatar, he was initially skeptical that a child could save the world. However, as he and his sister accompanied Aang on his quest, Sokka began to believe that Aang was indeed the only hope for peace in the world.

Despite being unable to bend, Sokka became the group’s strategist, constantly striving to prove himself as a great warrior like his father.
