Eddy received a posthumous Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2023, nearly one year after her death at age 55. 

Since she was best known for playing the role of head nurse Epiphany Johnson on the soap opera General Hospital for over 15 years, it was only natural for her work to be recognized. 

She was a beloved member of the cast up until her final episode, which aired in October 2022. 

Her friend and producing partner Tyler Ford accepted the award on Eddy’s behalf, offering bittersweet thanks and emphasizing how Eddy brought joy to all those who knew her through her acting. 

Ford also expressed gratitude to General Hospital’s producers and cast for embracing Eddy for so many years. The win signifies respected recognition of Eddy’s contribution to daytime television through her nuanced and warm-hearted portrayal of Epiphany. 

However, there is reported conflict as Eddy’s estranged family wishes to take possession of the trophy. Her brother Robbie Eddy claims the Television Academy did not notify them of her nomination and believes Ford intends to keep the Emmy himself. 

The family sent an appeal to the Academy requesting the award. As all parties await an official decision, the dispute has allegedly further complicated the problematic grieving process for Eddy’s loved ones in the year following her untimely passing. 

With emotions still raw, the posthumous honor seems to have resurfaced tensions between the actress’ chosen creative partners and relatives as they mourn her loss.

Sonya Eddy’s cause of death

Eddy’s cause of death in December 2022 at age 55 was due to an infection following a routine medical procedure.  

On December 9th, Eddy underwent an undisclosed non-emergency surgery at the hospital. She was discharged two days later, on December 11th. 

However, sometime after being released, Eddy started feeling unwell and was admitted back to the hospital on December 15th. It was then discovered that she had developed a severe infection, likely as a complication from her recent procedure. 

The infection progressed rapidly and became fatal. On December 19th, at 55, she passed away after being placed on life support. The beloved actress’ death shocked the entertainment community. 

Her close friend Octavia Spencer was the first to share the grievous news on social media, followed by remembrances from General Hospital’s executive producer and cast. 

Months later, Eddy’s General Hospital costars honored her during an emotional episode on March 29th, 2023. They tearfully recalled her character, Epiphany Johnson, had always brought “joy” and “light” to the show.  

While further medical details remain undisclosed, Eddy’s untimely passing was reportedly a result of complications from infection, cutting short a career defined by warmth and vitality. 

Her loss undeniably dimmed the lights at General Hospital, where she had enthralled audiences as head nurse Epiphany Johnson for over 15 years.
