The actor was born on August 14, 1945, in  Waco, Texas, USA as Stephen Glenn Martin. The name of his father is Glenn Vernon Martin, who was an aspiring actor and a real estate salesman, and the name of his mother is Mary Lee. 

He was raised in  Inglewood, California, and later moved to  Garden Grove, California. There, he attended Garden Grove High School and was a cheerleader. Regarding his education, he later attended Santa Ana College, where he took classes in poetry and also participated in comedies at the Bird Cage Theatre.

After graduating from college, he was enrolled in California State University located at Long Beach and majored in philosophy. He dropped philosophy and aspired to become a comedian, so he transferred to UCLA and continued to pursue his education at the University of California located in Los Angeles and switched his major to theater. 

Since early days, he was a working person. During his high school break, he used to work full-time at Disneyland selling guidebooks. During his work, he was captured in the background of the short movie Disneyland Dream, which became his first movie appearance.
