Tammy was born on May 5, 1942, in Itawamba County, Mississippi, USA. Her father’s name was William Hollis Pugh, and her mother’s name was Mildred Faye Russell. Her father worked as an aspiring musician who was a phenomenal guitar player, whereas her mother worked as a school teacher.

When she was just nine months old, her father died of a brain tumor. Before his death, her father expressed his wish for her daughter to become a musician by buying her a piano that she would play when she grew up.

Her mother moved to Nashville and started working on Nuclear Powerplant, whereas she started picking cotton for the local farm, which she hated doing every day. She and her mother’s sister grew a bond like sisters, and during that time, both of them started learning music and playing musical instruments.
