Tobias Menzies on playing Prince Philip in the crown

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Menzies shed light on the complexities of embodying the Duke of Edinburgh for seasons 3 and 4 of the hit Netflix series.

He described Philip as an emotionally heated person who has had to suppress a lot due to his ceremonial role as royal consort. He aimed to capture Philip’s irritability and quippiness, seeing them as expressions of his desire to shake up the status quo.

Researching Philip, Menzies came across letters showing the Prince had privately tried to mend things between Charles and Diana. This influenced his performance in season 4 scenes depicting Philip’s affection for Diana and efforts to make the marriage work.

Overall, Menzies was struck by the tragedy of Diana’s story, given how young she was entering the royal fold. In building his portrayal, he also focused on the tensions in Philip’s marriage to the Queen.

He sees Philip as an alpha male unaccustomed to playing second fiddle, often left with little to do day-to-day. However, Menzies feels Philip takes his duties seriously and has helped lighten the Queen’s load with his humor over the years.

While he identifies as a small republican, his time on The Crown gave him more respect for the royals’ sense of duty. Still, he feels meeting the real Prince Philip would be intimidating, doubting he’d divulge much emotionally.

Ultimately, Menzies finds Philip to be a complex figure, making him a compelling character to inhabit as an actor despite any misgivings about the monarchy itself.

Tobias Menzie in the upcoming series ‘Manhunt’

Menzies is set to star as Edwin Stanton, Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of War and friend, in the upcoming conspiracy thriller series Manhunt.

The show takes place after Lincoln’s assassination, following Stanton as he leads the manhunt for John Wilkes Booth and slowly descends into madness in the process.

Based on the bestselling nonfiction book ‘Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer,’ the limited series aims to provide a fictionalized account of the real-life effort to track down Booth in the aftermath of one of history’s most infamous crimes.

Menzies will be joined by an ensemble cast including Anthony Boyle as Booth, Lovie Simone, Will Harrison, and Matt Walsh. With production led by Monica Beletsky and direction from Carl Franklin, Manhunt promises to be a riveting political thriller.

As an Emmy-winning actor known for historical dramas like The Crown and Outlander, Menzies seems perfectly cast as the tenacious and increasingly unhinged Stanton.

Slated to debut on Apple TV+ in March 2024, Manhunt marks a prominent new starring vehicle for Menzies on a major streaming platform.

Coming off acclaimed performances such as Prince Philip and Black Jack Randall, Menzies will be expected to deliver another powerful portrayal scrutinizing a fascinating historical figure.
