Bridges starred as Willis Jackson on the hit sitcom Diff’rent Strokes for nearly the entire show run from 1978 to 1986. 

Alongside fellow child actor Coleman as Arnold, Bridges portrayed one of two poor Black brothers from Harlem who are adopted by a wealthy white Park Avenue businessman, Mr. Drummond, played by Conrad Bain. As the older brother Willis, 

He presented an excellent, athletic, and sometimes stubborn counterpoint to the cute and precocious Arnold.

Willis featured in comedic storylines centered on sibling rivalry and teenage antics, providing a relatable and edgy teen presence to balance out Coleman’s young boy-next-door Arnold.

Bridges faced significant legal troubles in his adulthood stemming from issues with drug addiction that severely damaged his career and reputation after his Diff’rent Strokes fame. 

His problems began as a teenager on the show when he started smoking marijuana at age 15. In his 20s, his drug use escalated to crack cocaine and methamphetamines to feed his severe addiction. He resorted to buying and selling drugs to support his habit.

His addiction led to arrests for drug possession and felony assault charges. In the late 80s, Bridges faced his most serious charges – the attempted murder of a drug dealer named Kenneth “Tex” Clay, who had been shot.

Prosecutors alleged he was the shooter in a drug deal gone wrong. Facing a lengthy prison sentence, he luckily was acquitted due to lack of evidence, thanks to the legal support of famous defense lawyer Johnnie Cochran.
