Ty Lue’s coaching career

Lue’s coaching career began in 2009 when he was named the director of basketball development for the Boston Celtics. In July 2013, he joined the coaching staff of the Los Angeles Clippers, gaining further experience in the league.

His career took a significant step forward on June 23, 2014, when he joined the Cleveland Cavaliers as the associate head coach, becoming the highest-paid assistant coach in the NBA. 

Then, on January 22, 2016, following the midseason firing of Blatt, he was named the head coach of the Cavaliers and signed to a three-year contract. Under his guidance, the Cavaliers achieved remarkable success, winning the NBA championship that spring.

He led the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals, becoming one of the few coaches to reach the Finals after becoming head coach midseason. On June 19, 2016, the Cavaliers won their first NBA championship. 

On October 28, 2018, the Cleveland Cavaliers fired him after a 0–6 start to the season. After being fired by the Cavaliers, he worked in an informal role with head coach Doc Rivers of the Los Angeles Clippers. 

Before the 2019–20 season, Lue was named the lead assistant coach on Rivers’ staff. On October 20, 2020, he was promoted to the head coach of the Clippers after Rivers’ departure.

 In his first season as the Clippers’ head coach (2020–21), he led the team to the Western Conference Finals, their first conference finals appearance in franchise history. However, the Clippers ultimately lost to the Phoenix Suns in six games.

Ty Lue’s NBA career and salary

Lue’s NBA career spanned over a decade, from 1998 to 2009, during which he played for several teams and earned substantial salaries. Denver Nuggets selected him as the 23rd overall pick in the 1998 NBA draft. Still, he was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. 

His first three years with the Lakers were marked by limited playing time and injuries in 2000, but he excelled during the 2001 playoffs. In the off-season of 2001, he signed with the Washington Wizards.

He then played with the Orlando Magic in the 2003-04 season. After that 2003-04 season, Lue, McGrady, Juwan Howard, and Reece Gaines were traded to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley, and Kelvin Cato.

He was then traded midseason to the Atlanta Hawks for Jon Barry. In 2005, he re-signed with the Hawks. On February 16, 2008, he was acquired by the Sacramento Kings in a trade. However, he was waived by the Kings on February 28, 2008, without playing a game for them. 

After clearing waivers, he signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks on March 4. On July 17, 2008, he was signed by the Milwaukee Bucks. On February 5, 2009, he was traded back to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Keith Bogans and cash considerations.

Throughout his NBA career, he earned substantial salaries, with his highest-earning seasons coming in 2005-06, 2006-07, and 2007-08, where he made $3.5 million annually. According to past salary records, his NBA career earnings amounted to over $21 million.

Ty Lue was fined by the NBA for 35k recently

Lue recently found himself in hot water with the NBA. On February 14, 2024, after leading his team to a hard-fought 130-125 win over the Golden State Warriors, his emotions boiled over, and he faced consequences.

The incident occurred in the fourth quarter of the game when he received two separate technical fouls early on. He was ejected from the contest as tensions flared between the teams, resulting in a brief skirmish. 

Later, A video surfaced of him in a semi-public area near the Clippers’ locker room at Chase Center, where he was seen yelling at his players and staff, making accusations against the officials. 

“Where are the refs at now? Cheating. That’s all they be doing,” he shouted, questioning the integrity of the officiating. His criticism didn’t stop there. He was also captured on video shouting, “Where is James? The referee. I want to kick him in the mouth.” 

On February 16, 2024, the NBA responded to his actions by fining him $35,000. In a statement released that Friday, the league cited “public criticism of the officiating and for questioning the integrity of game officials” as the reason for the penalty.

His outburst came when the Clippers have been on a remarkable roll since December. With the addition of newcomer James Harden, the team has gone 28-7, emerging as a significant contender for the franchise’s first NBA title.
